Traill, William Henry, 1843 – 1902
Biographical notes
William Henry Traill (1843-1902), journalist and parliamentarian, was born at London, England, son of John Heddle Traill and his wife Eliza, nee Heddle. Traill was employed as a station-hand in Queensland by 1861 and after his marriage in 1866 to Jessie Lewis he worked as a draftsman and clerk. At this time he began working as a journalist contributing to Queensland newspapers. He was employed by Queensland newspapers before moving to Sydney to become editor of the Sydney Mail in 1878. He wrote for a number of newspapers including the Bulletin of which he became editor in 1881. Traill was elected member of the NSW Legislative Assembly for the seat of South Sydney (1889-1894).
