Biographical notes

Bourn Russell (1794-1880), was born at Sussex, England, and arrived at Sydney, N.S.W. in 1826. He was part owner and commander of ships on the India, China and South Seas runs, and surveyed parts of Sakhalin Island, the north coast of Japan, the Solomon Islands, the Louisiade Archipelago, Dampier Strait and New Guinea. After some whaling ventures he opened a store at West Maitland, N.S.W. in 1835.

Russell was elected to the first Legislative Assembly of N.S.W. for the seat of Northumberland Boroughs in March 1856 but was disqualified in August of that year. He was a member of the NSW Legislative Council (1858-1880).
