McIlwaine, Garry David, 1944 –

Biographical notes

Garry David McIlwaine (1944- ), barrister and parliamentarian, was born at Concord in 1944, son of Charles Victor and Leila Josephine McIlwaine. McIlwaine was educated at St Ambrose School at Concord, Marist Brothers High School at Eastwood and the University of Sydney where he graduated a Bachelor of Laws.

McIlwaine worked as a legal officer in the NSW Public Service from 1962 until 1978 when he was elected to the NSW Legislative Assembly as the ALP member in the state seat of Yaralla. After an electoral re-distribution in 1981 McIlwaine was elected to the seat of Ryde which he held until his electoral defeat in 1988.

McIlwaine was admitted as a barrister in 1970. Since his parliamentary career he has worked as a Judicial Registrar in the Federal Court of Australia; a Judicial Registrar in the Industrial Relations Court; as an Arbitrator, Mediator and Neutral Evaluator; and as a barrister.
