Biographical notes
Michael Maher (1936- ), solicitor and parliamentarian, was born at Haberfield, Sydney, the son of Ray Septimus Maher (1911-1966), a former MLA (1952-1965) and Speaker of the Legislative Assembly (1959-1965). Michael Maher was educated at De La Salle College, Ashfield and the University of Sydney where he graduated Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Arts.
In 1973 Maher won the seat of Drummoyne in the NSW Legislative Assembly for the ALP following the retirement of sitting Labor member Reg Coady. He resigned as a MLA in January 1982 and in March of 1982 won a by-election in the federal seat of Lowe for the ALP following the retirement of sitting Liberal Party member Sir William McMahon. Maher remained the federal member for Lowe until his electoral defeat in 1987.
