Biographical notes

Peter Ffrench Loughlin (1881-1960), teacher, farmer and parliamentarian, was born at Braidwood, NSW, son of John and Sarah Jane Loughlin. He joined the Education Department in 1900 and taught at various country schools until 1917.

Loughlin was elected ALP member of the NSW Legislative Assembly for the seats of Burrangong (1917-1920) and Cootamundra (1920-1927). Loughlin was deputy leader of the Labor Party 1923 to 1926 until he resigned from the party in September 1926. He stood unsuccessfully as an Independent in the seat of Goulburn in 1930. In 1932 was elected United Australia Party MLA for Goulburn, holding the seat until his defeat in 1935. He was Minister for Lands and Forests (1920-1922, 1925-1926).
