Biographical notes
James Alan Longley, banker and parliamentarian, was born in 1958. He was educated at Narrabeen High School and St. Andrews Cathedral School, Sydney. He graduated from University of Sydney with the degree of Bachelor of Economics and from Macquarie University with the degree of Master of Economics. Between 1980 and 1985 Longley was employed as a banker and from 1985 to 1986 as a tutor in accounting at the University of Washington, USA.
In May 1986 Longley was elected to the Legislative Assembly as the Liberal Party member for the northern Sydney seat of Pittwater. Longley was Minister for Community Services and Assistant Minister for Health (1992-1993), Minister for Community Services and Minister for Aboriginal Affairs (May-October 1993), and Minister for Community Services, Minister for Aboriginal Affairs and Minister for the Ageing (October 1992-1995). Longley retired from Parliament in 1996.
