Lang, George Dunmore, 1832 – 1875

Biographical notes

George Dunmore Lang (1832-1875), bank manager, journalist and parliamentarian, was the son of Rev. John Dunmore Lang and his wife Wilhelmina. He joined the Bank of NSW as a clerk in 1850 and transferred to Melbourne in 1852. By 1854 he was the manager of the Ballarat branch of the bank and after six months in the position was arrested and charged with embezzlement for which he was sentenced to five years hard labour. His innocence was strongly protested by his father who was charged and convicted of criminal libel defending his son. George Lang was released from prison in 1857 after a parliamentary select committee inquiry heard evidence which was found to hold the conviction in question.

George Lang was elected member of the NSW Legislative Assembly for the seat of Tumut in June 1859 but resigned his seat in April 1860 to go to Brisbane where he worked as a journalist and as agent for his father's Moreton Bay Co. In 1862 he established the Burrangong Courier and between 1863 and 1865 he worked as a journalist in Brisbane and Rockhampton. He returned to Sydney in 1866 to work as a clerk in the Audit Office, leaving the job in 1868. He died at Gulgong in 1875. [ref:ADB 2;Biographical register of the NSW parliament 1856-1901/Connolly]
