Biographical notes
Samuel Barry Jones (1923-1999), fitter and parliamentarian, was born at Newcastle and educated at Newcastle Boys' High School. He trained and worked as a fitter and was a shop steward for the Amalgamated Engineering Union. He joined the Australian Labor Party in 1945. Between 1959 and 1965 Jones was an alderman of Newcastle City Council and in 1965 was elected to the NSW Legislative Assembly in the Newcastle seat of Waratah for the ALP. Jones held the seat of Waratah until 1984.
