Hogue, James Alexander, 1846 – 1920
Biographical notes
James Alexander Hogue (1846-1920), journalist and parliamentarian, was born at Clarence Town, NSW, son of Fitzarthur and Elizabeth Hogue. He was educated at Newcastle Grammar School and trained as a compositor with the Newcastle Chronicle before joining the Maitland Mercury as a reporter in 1873. In 1875 Hogue moved to Sydney to become a parliamentary reporter. In 1880 he became a sub-editor on the Evening News. Hogue resigned as editor on the Evening News in 1895 but continued to contribute to the newspaper. Hogue married Jessie Robards in 1878.
Hogue was elected member of the NSW Legislative Assembly for the seat of Glebe (1894-1904), later The Glebe (1904-1910). He held the ministries of Public Instruction (1898-1899), Colonial Secretary (1904-1907), Public Instruction and Labour and Industry (1907), and Labor and Industry (1908-1910). [ref:ADB 9]
