Biographical notes

Frederick Maclean Hewitt (1908-1976), parliamentarian, was born at Muswellbrook, NSW, son of Frederick James and Ida May Hewitt. He was educated at Neutral Bay Junior Technical School and worked firstly for the Commercial Banking Co. and later for a timber merchant before establishing his own company.

Hewitt was elected a member of the NSW Legislative Council (1955-1976) for the Liberal Party. Hewitt was Minister for Child Welfare, Minister for Social Welfare and Deputy Leader of Government (1968-1971), Minister for Labour and Industry and Deputy Leader of Government (1971-1976), Minister for Consumer Affairs (1973-1976), Minister for Federal Affairs (1957-1976) and Deputy Leader of Opposition (May-June 1976).
