Eagar, Geoffrey, 1818 – 1891
Biographical notes
Geoffrey Eagar (1818-1891), accountant and parliamentarian, was born at Sydney, son of Edward and Jemima Eagar. He was educated at schools operated by J.D. Lang and W.T. Cape and worked in clerical positions before joining the Bank of New South Wales in 1854.
In 1859 Eagar was appointed to the NSW Legislative Council but resigned in 1860. He was elected to the NSW Legislative Assembly for the seat of West Sydney (1863-1864, 1865-1869) and was appointed Secretary for Public Works (1858-1860) and Colonial Treasurer (1863-1865, 1866-1868). After leaving parliament Eagar was appointed head of the NSW Treasury (1872-1891).
