Biographical notes

Dr. H. Martin Doyle (1859-1929), medical practitioner and parliamentarian, was born at Ballan, Victoria. He was educated at St. Patrick's College, Melbourne and in Europe where he studied in Ireland, Paris, and London qualifying as a surgeon in London. Doyle left England in 1889 and worked as medical officer on a coastal ship until 1891 when he was appointed medical superintendent of Newcastle Hospital. Doyle was appointed to the NSW Legislative Council (1912-1929) by the Labor Party but broke with them over the issue of conscription during World War I.
