Biographical notes
Ezekiel Alexander Baker (1823-1912), mineralogist and parliamentarian, was born in England and arrived in Australia in 1853 as a mineralogist to a mining company which subsequently failed. He prospected on the gold-fields and after anti-Chinese riots at Burrangong in 1860 to 1861 he was chosen to present the miners' case in Sydney.
Baker was elected a member of the NSW Legislative Assembly for the seats of Goldfields (1870-1880) and Carcoar (1880-1881 and 1884-1887). Baker was Secretary for Lands (1877) and Secretary for Mines (1877 and 1878-1881).
